PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy
Kirk McCarville—Hardrock 100

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” —Jack Kerouac

Kerouac was right. Go climb that mountain! Our “mountains” in endurance and adventure sports take many shapes. From finishing a 5K to taking on an Ironman Triathlon. From hiking the Grand Canyon to climbing a Himalayan peak. From backcountry skiing to completing the European Haute Route. The one constant among these endurance endeavors is that the aerobic engine powers them all. Our aerobic fitness largely determines how quickly we will move, our enjoyment level, the margin of safety, and even, if we will get to that finish line.

This is where we come in. We develop training plans so that you can train properly and achieve your highest aerobic fitness just in time to meet your most challenging objectives. We use technology (HR monitors, power meters, GPS, etc.) and the proven training method of progressive periodization to get you there.

The basics of our training approach involve building a strong aerobic base by training at low to moderate intensities to build the aerobic foundation and increase the ability to burn fat. We then increase the intensity of the training to a moderate to hard level to improve muscular endurance and strength. Lastly, we sharpen this aerobic block of metal into a sharp axe by using high intensity interval training at or above lactate threshold levels. We rest periodically and allow you to reach a peak of fitness just in time for your big day or days.

Build aerobic base, add tempo work, do intervals, rest, repeat.

Each plan is specific to the individual. The modality, frequency, duration and intensity of the workouts are unique to each person. Some people may train seven days a week, while others might train only three days. It is all about creating a plan that fits into your life that you can perform consistently.
